Racing Victoria Official Puts Forward Cox Plate Night Theory

Thursday, 5th April 2007

High profile Racing Victoria official Leigh Jordan has suggested, according to thoroughbred internet.com, that the Gr1 Cox Plate (2,040m) at Moonee Valley should be run at night under lights. Traditionally held the Saturday before the Spring Carnival's Derby Day at Flemington, the Cox Plate is widely regarded as Australasia's premier weight-for-age event. Jordan is believed to have made the comment as a result of the growing international profile of the Dubai World Cup meeting (also run under lights) and observed: "a seven or eight-race program coupled with live entertainment over 4 1/2 hours would be perfect for prime-time television and would allow the race to be telecast live into Europe and Asia, which could only enhance the race and the Australian industry."
