Meurice Wins Gr1 Champagne Stakes

Monday, 16th April 2007

Woodlands Stud stallion Strategic (Zeditave-Sudden Impulse, by Luskin Star) had a major Gr1 success with the only juvenile to contest all 3 legs of the Sydney 2YO Triple Crown, with 2YO colt Meurice (Strategic-Espadon, by Danehill) taking out the $450,000 Gr1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) for 2YOs at Randwick. Ridden by Nash Rawiller, who recently relocated to ride for trainer Gai Waterhouse, Meurice finished too well for fellow colt Solo Flyer (Belong To Me-Fly The Flag, by Sir Tristram) and favoured filly Camarilla (Elusive Quality-Camarena, by Danehill) who suffered a race-ending check soon after turning for home, and did brilliantly to recover. Meurice now has 3 wins (including the Gr2 STC Todman Stakes) and 4 placings (including the Gr1 STC Golden Slipper Stakes & Gr1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes) from 7 starts for earnings of $970,300.
