Tuesday, 24th April 2007

On Sunday afternoon (US time) English-bred 6YO gelding On The Acorn (Inchinor-Amarice, by Suave Dancer) qualified for a run in the 2007 Gr1 Emirates Melbourne Cup when he won the Gr2 San Juan Capistrano (2800m) at Santa Anita in California. Ridden by Victor Espinosa, On The Acorn settled well back in the 7-horse field before producing a strong finishing run to down the favourite Sweet Return. On The Acorn is owned by a group of prominent US sporting identities including Santa Anita publicist Jack Disney and his brother Doug; Buck Rodgers, the former manager of the Montreal Expos and California Angels; Ross Newhan, a baseball writer for the Los Angeles Times; and Paul Salata, a former football player with USC and San Francisco 49ers.
