Sugar And Spice & All Things Nice

Thursday, 26th April 2007

Thursday odd-spot: Following last year's report that US$1,000 Woodford Reserve Mint Juleps would be available at the Gr1 Kentucky Derby, here's a 2007 update with a distinctly Australian flavour! In a very sweet deal, three pounds of Queensland's finest sugar will take a 1st-class trip to the US to be included in this year's Woodford Reserve US$1,000 Mint Julep. The 2006 ingredients boasted a personal selection of Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon, mint from Morocco, sugar from the South Pacific and ice from the Arctic Circle, however this year Australia has been honoured with the inclusion of freshly harvested organic Queensland sugar courtesy of Eco-Farms. In an increase from last year's program, 133 Woodford Reserve US$1,000 Mint Juleps will be served at Kentucky Derby Day on May 5, with all the proceeds going to the Thoroughbred Charities of America, a non-profit organization which benefits retired thoroughbreds and jockeys. In addition to the exclusive cocktail, punters also get to keep the limited-edition 24 carat gold-plated julep cup, served with designer Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon sterling silver sipping straws and a certificate of authenticity signed by Chris Morris, Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon's Master Distiller. The cup, stirrer and certificate will be encased in a custom made oak box for safe keeping after the cocktail is consumed. Thirteen special cups, encrusted with precious rubies and diamonds, will be sold in an on-line auction by Christie's. The auction cups include: the 13 Triple Crown winners and the first and last Derby winners (Aristides and Barbaro).
