Monday, 30th April 2007

Former Collingrove shuttler Marju (Last Tycoon-Flame Of Tara, by Artaius) added an international Gr1 triumph when multiple Gr1-winning 5YO gelding Viva Pataca (Marju-Comic, by Be My Chief) scored a 1.75-lengths victory in yesterday's HK$14 million (A$2.3m) Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin in Hong Kong. UK-bred Viva Pataca (ridden by Mick Kinane for expatriate Australian trainer John Moore) defeated NZ-bred 6YO gelding & fellow multiple Gr1-winner Vengeance Of Rain (Zabeel-Danelagh, by Danehill) & Gr1-winning Japanese-bred 4YO Admire Moon (End Sweep-My Katies, by Sunday Silence). UK-bred Viva Pataca (owned by Macau casino magnate Stanley Ho) was originally a 26,000 guineas (A$68,000) yearling at the 2003 UK Tattersalls October Sale & raced initially as Comic Strip when trained in England by Sir Mark Prescott. Viva Pataca subsequently won both 2006's Gr1 HK Derby (2000m) and Gr1 Champions & Chater Cup (2400m), as well as finishing 3rd in the Gr2 International Cup Trial (2000m). Already in 2007 he finished 3rd in January's Gr1 Stewards Cup (1600m) & then runner-up in last month's Gr1 HK Gold Cup (2000m).
