ARB Says Govt Ignored Quarantine Warnings
And in dramatic developments this morning, The Daily Telegraph reports "the Federal Government ignored warnings from the Australian Racing Board 2 years ago that lax quarantine protocols could lead to an outbreak like the devastating equine influenza crisis which has crippled NSW racing". The ARB "wrote to the Howard Government twice (September 2004 & May 2005) pointing out concerns about the quarantine protocols in place at sites like Eastern Creek". ARB chief executive Andrew Harding revealed: "We said they were dumbing down quarantine standards & protocols were not being enforced. We scripted what is now happening. But the federal authorities wrote back & said we were wrong. They said an outbreak such as what has happened could never occur. Unfortunately this is a wake-up call with a $100 million bill & the racing industry is not going to foot the bill."
