Irish Smoke Wins US Gr1 Spinaway Stakes

Tuesday, 4th September 2007

In the US, unbeaten juvenile Irish Smoke (Smoke Glacken-Added Time, by Gilded Time) "gained command from 3-wide approaching the stretch & drew clear with a determined drive for a 3.25-lengths win" in the US$250,000 Gr1 Spinaway Stakes (7 furlongs) for 2YO fillies at Saratoga in New York, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Irish Smoke (ridden by Julien Leparoux for trainer Patrick Biancone) came from "more than 7-lengths off a blistering pace" set by last month's Gr2 Adirondack Stakes winner (& previously unbeaten US$1 million yearling) More Happy (Vindication-Apelia, by Cool Victor) who raced through "an opening quarter in 22.02sec & a half-mile in 44.82sec"; front-running More Happy compounded in the straight & multiple graded stakes-placed winner A To The Croft (Menifee-Heart Warmer, by Devil's Bag) finished 2nd, with stakes-winner Yonagucci (Yonaguska-Designer Label, by Pentelicus) in 3rd place. Kentucky-bred Irish Smoke (who scored on debut over 5 furlongs at Saratoga on August 2) now has 2 wins from starts for US$187,200 earnings.
