Wednesday, 5th September 2007

On the track in the US, former NZ Trelawney Stud shuttler Van Nistelrooy (Storm Cat-Halory, by Halo) added a juvenile Gr1 triumph when daughter Set Play (Van Nistelrooy-Boldy's Reflection, by Bold Ruckus) "surged to the lead with a sweeping move from 4-wide at the top of the stretch" & raced away to score a 2-lengths victory in the US$250,000 Gr1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (7 furlongs on the all-weather Polytrack) for 2YO fillies at Del Mar in California, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Set Play (ridden by Brice Blanc for trainer Peter Miller) defeated favourite Spring Awakening (In Excess-Catchofthecentury, by Carson City) & Izarra (Distorted Humor-Arlucea, by Broad Brush). At her previous start, Virginia-bred Set Play finished 2nd in the Gr3 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar on August 8 & overall now has 2 wins & 2 placings (also the Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood Park on June 30) from 4 starts for US$220,920 earnings.
