US Champ Rhythm Euthanased Aged 20
Former US champion & 1989 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Rhythm (sire of 3 Southern Hemisphere champions) was euthanased aged 20 "after fracturing a leg in a paddock accident at Diamond F Ranch in California," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Rhythm (Mr Prospector-Dance Number, by Northern Dancer) stood privately this season at Diamond F; he is the sire of 261 winners from 519 starters in 13 crops of racing age including: Australian & NZ champion Ethereal (winner of the 2001 Gr1 Melbourne Cup & Gr1 Caulfield Cup; NZ champions Zabeat & Upsetthym; US Gr3-winner Major Rhythm (his lone graded stakes-winner in America); & 2001 Gr1 NZ Oaks winner Tapildo. His progeny have earned US$35,527,643. On the track, Rhythm won 6 of 20 starts & earned US$1,592,532: he notched 3 victories from 6 starts as a 2YO (including the Gr1 Breeder's Cup Juvenile plus runner-up in the Gr1 Champagne Stakes); then as a 3YO he won the 1990 Gr1 Travers Stakes & Canada's Gr3 Colin Stakes (plus placings in the Gr1 Haskell Invitational Handicap, Gr1 Woodward Handicap & Gr3 Dwyer Stakes).
