Dylan Thomas Wins Irish Gr1 Champion Stakes
In Ireland, ill-fated Coolmore shuttler & multiple champion sire Danehill (Danzig-Razyana, by His Majesty) recorded a Gr1 quinella when favoured 4YO entire Dylan Thomas (Danehill-Lagrion, by Dieses) scored a 1.5-lengths victory in the €1 million (A$1.6m) Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes (10 furlongs) at Leopardstown to claim this race for the 2nd successive year. Now 5-time Gr1-winner Dylan Thomas (ridden by Kieren Fallon for trainer Aidan O'Brien) defeated the 3YO colts (& both stable-mates of the winner) Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill-Love Me True, by Kingmambo) & front-running Red Rock Canyon (Rock Of Gibraltar-Imagine, by Sadler's Wells). Last start Dylan Thomas finished runner-up in the UK Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes (10.5 furlongs) at York on August 21, after winning July's UK Gr1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes (12 furlongs) at Ascot by 4-lengths. Earlier this season Dylan Thomas also won France's Gr1 Prix Ganay (2100m) at Longchamp in April & then finished runner-up in both Ireland's Gr1 Tattersalls Gold Cup (10.5 furlongs) at The Curragh in May & the UK Gr1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes (10 furlongs) at Royal Ascot in June. Last season Dylan Thomas not only won the Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes, but also the Gr1 Irish Derby (12 furlongs) at The Curragh & finished 3rd in the Gr1 English Derby at Epsom Downs. Overall Dylan Thomas now has 9 wins from 17 starts. After the race jockey Fallon declared Dylan Thomas is "the best horse I've ever ridden", while trainer O'Brien emphasised the importance of the Irish Champion Stakes, noting: "It is often fast ground over 1.25 miles & I would say it is probably the most important race for stallions in Europe. We always thought he wants fast ground & a solid run race: when he gets that he is nearly unbeatable."
