Echelon Wins Irish Gr1 Matron Stakes

Monday, 10th September 2007

Also in Ireland, ill-fated Coolmore shuttler & multiple champion sire Danehill (Danzig-Razyana, by His Majesty) recorded another Gr1 triumph when Cheveley Park Stud home-bred 5YO mare Echelon (Danehill-Exclusive, by Polar Falcon) scored a 1.5-lengths victory in the €250,000 (A$400,000) Gr1 Matron Stakes (8 furlongs) for fillies & mares at Leopardstown. Favourite Echelon (ridden by Ryan Moore for trainer Sir Michael Stoute) defeated the 4YO mares Red Evie (Intikhab-Malafemmena, by Nordico) who won this race last year & Eastern Appeal (Shinko Forest-Haut Volee, by Top Ville). At her previous start a fortnight ago, Echelon also won the UK Gr2 Celebration Mile (8 furlongs) at Goodwood; this latest victory was Echelon's 4th stakes-win this season, also following victories in both May's Gr3 Dahlia Stakes (9 furlongs) at Newmarket & June's Gr3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes (8.5 furlongs) at Epsom (for the 2nd year running). Last year Echelon won the Gr3 Chartwell Fillies Stakes (7 furlongs) at Lingfield Park (plus runner-up in 2006's Gr2 Windsor Forest Stakes over 8 furlongs at Royal Ascot) & in 2005 she won the Listed Miles & Morrison October Stakes (7 furlongs) at Newmarket.
