Kentucky Yearlings Day-1: US$2.9m Dynaformer Colt
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's bloodstock advisor John Ferguson out-bid John Magnier & paid US$2.9 million for a Dynaformer colt (the 10th foal out of Gr1-winning Mr Prospector mare Preach) in early action this morning (Australian time) during the opening session of the 15-day 5,553-lots Keeneland September Yearling Sale in Kentucky. The colt is a half-brother to Claiborne Farm stallion Pulpit. Ferguson (who bought the colt's half-brother by Storm Cat for US$3 million in last year's Keeneland September sale) told thoroughbredtimes.com: "At the end of the day it's a great family & we're pleased with the Storm Cat; he's developed well. This is another May foal. There's a good horse (by Dynaformer) in England now called Lucarno, who's a good 3YO & of course there was Barbaro last year. Dynaformer is a proven stallion at the highest level. So you have a great individual by a sire who can do it & a family you know can do it & a farm you know can do it. He really is an exciting horse for us to have." Claiborne consigned the colt: he & last year's Storm Cat colt are the only offspring from 1991 Gr1 Frizette Stakes winner Preach to go through the sales ring & Claiborne's Dell Hancock commented: "It's a great family; they don't really get any better. We were a little disappointed last year. You hate to say that, but we thought we had a chance to top the sale. If you stick around long enough, you get paid back."
