Santagostino Retired To Pencarrow Stud

Tuesday, 11th September 2007

In New Zealand, Pencarrow Stud manager Leon Casey announced Gr2-winning 4YO mare Santagostino (Giant's Causeway-Devil's Lair, by Sir Tristram) has been retired to stud. Santagostino pulled up lame after her last start at Hastings on September 1 & "the decision was made for the mare to join the 65-strong broodmare band" at Peter & Philip Vela's Pencarrow property. Santagostino (a half-sister to NZB Filly-Of-The-Year & Gr1 NZ Oaks winner Vapour Trail) won 2006's Gr2 Great Northern Guineas (2100m) at Ellerslie & this year's Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) in Queensland; she also notched placings in February's NZ Gr2 Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Classic (2000m) at Te Rapa & 2006's Listed NZB Insurance Triple Crown Cup (2000m) at Ellerslie. Overall she recorded 4 wins from 13 starts for NZ$250,000 earnings. Santagostino's half-brother (by Coolmore shuttler Johannesburg) was sold for NZ$410,000 at the 2006 NZB Karaka yearling sales.
