NSW & Vic Ministers Call To Broaden Assistance Package

Friday, 14th September 2007

NSW Racing Minister Graham West & Victorian Racing Minister Rob Hulls have written jointly to Federal Minister For Agriculture Peter McGauran emphasising equine influenza is a national issue & requires wider financial assistance across the racing codes. Their letter notes: "Victorian racing, along with the NSW greyhound industry, is currently bearing the brunt of responsibility for the continuation of the national racing industry in the short-to-medium term & is doing so at a significant financial cost. The Victorian & NSW Governments applaud the efforts of the Victorian thoroughbred & harness racing industries & the NSW greyhound industry in continuing to provide a full racing program for the benefit of the national racing industry. In contrast, your Government has isolated & effectively penalised the Victorian racing industry & the NSW greyhound industry by ignoring the industry's efforts in keeping the national racing industry afloat at this difficult time. Instead of continuing to ignore this important matter, we ask that you demonstrate some decisive national leadership, enhance your current package & acknowledge the efforts of the Victorian racing industry & NSW greyhound industry by providing a fair & equitable assistance package."
