Kentucky Yearlings Day-5: US$1m Johannesburg Colt

Monday, 17th September 2007

Agent J.J. Pletcher (father of trainer Todd Pletcher) paid the Day-5 top price of US$1 million for a colt by Coolmore shuttler Johannesburg (out of placed Quiet American mare American Jewel) consigned by Dromoland Farm as agent. The Kentucky-bred colt's dam American Jewel is a-half sister to 2001 Broodmare-Of-The-Year Turko's Turn (dam of US Horse-Of-The-Year & dual classic winner Point Given). Keeneland director of sales Geoffrey Russell commented: "Today starts a catalogue in which we stress conformation to consignors. And the buyers responded, topped by a US$1 million purchase. The top price was surprising but lovely. Mr Pletcher's son has had great success with Johannesburgs in the past, so they went back to the well. He was a very nice individual."
