Melb Cup Plans 2: Weld's Bellamy Cat Undecided

Monday, 17th September 2007

Apart from the Ballydoyle pair, there were 3 other Melbourne Cup entries in the Gr1 Irish st Leger: Bellamy Cay, Mighty & Galistic. Although Bellamy Cay (having his 1st run in Ireland) trailed in last of the 9 runners, trainer Dermot Weld "intends giving the 5YO another chance before making any decision about a trip to Flemington" reported racingpost.co.uk. Weld commented: "He never settled & ran much too keenly. When that happens, especially to a horse having his 1st race for 6 months, they get very tired & that's what happened. I'm thinking of running him in the Diamond Stakes over 10 furlongs at Fairyhouse on Saturday (September 22) & we'll see how he gets on." Mighty finished 5th (1 place in front of Galistic) & jockey John Egan said of the Jane Chapple-Hyam trained 4YO: "He blew very hard after the race. He hadn't run since Royal Ascot & the race should bring him on a lot. Australia is the plan, with the Geelong Cup, the Melbourne Cup & the Sandown Cup all under consideration."
