NZ Mare Owners Called To Action

Monday, 17th September 2007

New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing began its weekly newsletter with the declaration: "If you've got a broodmare, put her in foal! That's the message from NZ bloodstock industry leaders in response to the dire situation facing Australian racing & breeding in the grip of the equine influenza crisis." NZTM chairman Bill Gianotti summed up bluntly: "It's a terrible state of affairs & we have genuine sympathy for everyone caught up in it. And given what's happened in Australia, we have good reason to feel vulnerable & aware that we do live in a glass-house. But the fact is that the equine influenza crisis across the Tasman is one very good reason why all broodmares in NZ should be mated this breeding season. There's a real threat of a shortage of horses in 2 or 3 years time & NZ is perfectly positioned to capitalise on that. NZ has always been a significant supplier of horses to Australia & that will only be accentuated by what's happening in the Hunter Valley & elsewhere."
