US Champ & Sire Maria's Mon Euthanased Aged 14
US 1995 champion 2YO male Maria's Mon (sire of 2001 Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos) was euthanased aged 14 at Kentucky's Hagyard Equine Medical Institute "after failing to recover from a week-long illness" reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Clifford Barry (general manager of Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stud in Kentucky, where Maria's Mon stood his entire career) said Maria's Mon (Wavering Monarch-Carlotta Maria, by Caro) "apparently suffered from multiple organ dysfunction". Maria's Mon is currently ranked 27th on the US general sire list with US$3,894,594 in seasonal progeny earnings. He finished 11th in 2006 when his daughter Wait A While earned champion 3YO filly honors (among 10 individual stakes-winners, including Gr1-winner Latent Heat & Gr2-winner Strong Contender). Maria's Mon covered 132 mares in the 2007 season at US$60,000 (up 140% from US$25,000 in 2006). Maria's Mon (who began his career with a US$7,500 fee in 1997) also sired Gr1-winner See How She Runs & multiple graded stakes-winners High Limit & Cause To Believe). On the track, Maria's Mon won 4 of 7 starts (3 graded stakes as a 2YO in 1995, including the Gr1 Moet Champagne Stakes & Gr1 Futurity Stakes) & earned US$507,140.
