Canadian Sire Dixieland Brass Euthanased Aged 21
Also in Canada, Kentucky-bred sire Dixieland Brass (Dixieland Band-Windmill Girl, by Gallant Romeo) was euthanased aged 21 at Flying Horse Farm in British Columbia (where he stood since 1995) "because of a liver malfunction," reported bloodhorse.com. On the track, Dixieland Brass "was on his way to becoming a top 3YO when he was pulled up in the 1989 US Gr1 Florida Derby as odds-on favorite & retired"; in his 2 other starts that year, he won the Gr2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes & Gr3 Hutcheson Stakes (by 6-lengths). Overall he retired with 5 wins from 8 starts (also including the Allegheny Stakes as a 2YO) & entered stud at Dearborn-Vinery in Kentucky. His best Kentucky-sired runner was Brass Scale (who won the 1994 US Gr2 Pegasus Handicap). Following the move to Canada, Dixieland Brass also sired stakes-winners including: Beau Brass (winner of the Speed To Spare Stakes in 2004, 2005 & 2006); Native Brass (1999 Gr3 Canadian Derby); & Always A Dixie (2002 Emerald Breeders' Cup Distaff Handicap). Overall Dixieland Brass has produced 21 stakes-winners & has US$11 million progeny earnings.
