Shakespeare Wins Canada Gr1 Woodbine Mile
In North America, Dell Ridge Farm's injury-plagued home-bred 6YO entire Shakespeare (Theatrical-Lady Shirl, by That's A Nice) "continued a remarkable return to racing" by "rallying from 10th in a field of 14" to "seize command in the stretch" & score a 1-length victory in Canada's C$1 million (US$973,000) Gr1 Woodbine Mile Stakes (8 furlongs on turf) at Woodbine in Ontario, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. In his 2nd start "since being sidelined for 21-months with a tendon injury", Shakespeare (ridden by Garrett Gomez for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin) "unleashed a determined rail run" in the straight to defeat Gr1-winning 4YO entire Kip Deville (Kipling-Klondike Kaytie, by Encino) & multiple graded stakes-placed winner & fellow 4YO entire Galantas (Tale Of The Cat-Colonial Debut, by Pleasant Colony). At his previous start, Shakespeare won over 8 furlongs at Saratoga on August 2 in his 1st start since he was sidelined following an unplaced finish in the 2005 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf. Earlier in 2005, Kentucky-bred Shakespeare won 5 successive starts (after missing more than a year with a knee injury), culminating in a course record in the Gr2 Belmont Breeders' Cup Handicap (9 furlongs on turf) at Belmont Park followed by victory in the Gr1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (12 furlongs on turf) at Belmont. Overall Shakespeare (whose dam Lady Shirl was a Gr1-winner) now has 7 wins from 8 starts for US$1,293,780 earnings.
