IRT Horse Exports Begin Again

Thursday, 20th September 2007

Leading global equine transport company IRT confirmed that, following a shipment from Auckland to Melbourne last week, horse exports are slowly building up despite the equine influenza outbreak in NSW & Queensland. Over the last few days IRT's Australian & US divisions negotiated with the US Department Of Agriculture for the 3 Coolmore stallions (Tale Of The Cat, Johannesburg & Lion Heart) to fly out of Sydney to New York on a specially chartered aircraft. In addition 12 Arab horses were transferred to Jordan for that country's Royal Family. The latter involved a substantial re-route with passage eventually negotiated via the US & Europe to Amman; originally the shipment was to be via Singapore & UAE, but the UAE would not agree to transit. More shipments are planned in the coming weeks, albeit several countries continue to maintain bans on the import of horse from Australia, even from EI-free states.
