Monday, 24th September 2007

Also in New York, former Grand Lodge Thoroughbreds shuttler Distorted Humor (Forty Niner-Danzig's Beauty, by Danzig) added both a group win & placing when Winstar Farms & Padua Stables 3YO colt Any Given Saturday (Distorted Humor-Weekend In Indy, by A P Indy) scored a 2.5-lengths victory over his older rivals in the US$154,000 Gr2 Brooklyn Handicap (9 furlongs) at Belmont Park. Hot favourite Any Given Saturday (ridden by Garrett Gomez for trainer Todd Pletcher) defeated front-running Tasteyville (With Approval-Rahfee, by Rahy) & Helsinki (Distorted Humor-Well Dressed, by Notebook). At his previous start, Any Given Saturday scored by 4.5-lengths in last month's Gr1 Haskell Invitational Handicap (9 furlongs) at Monmouth Park in New Jersey; & that followed a 4-lengths victory in July's Gr2 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park. Earlier this season, Any Given Saturday also won February's Listed Sam Davis Stakes (8.5 furlongs) at Tampa Bay Downs, before finishing runner-up in March's Gr3 Tampa Bay Derby & 3rd in April's Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct. Overall Kentucky-bred Any Given Saturday now has 6 wins & 3 placings (also including last season's runner-up in the Gr2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs) from 10 starts for US$1,083,533 earnings. After his victory in August's Gr1 Haskell, it was announced Any Given Saturday will retire following the US$5 million Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic (10 furlongs) on October 27 & join the Darley stallion roster in 2008. Meanwhile his winning sire Distorted Humor (whose fee jumped from US$150,000 to US$225,000 this season at Kentucky's WinStar Farm) has had his fee increased for 5 consecutive years (after beginning his stallion career at US$12,500 in 1999 & standing the 2002 season for just US$10,000).
