Mahler & Scorpion Ballydoyle Runners In Melb Cup
Sue Magnier, Derrick Smith & Michael Tabor's Irish-trained 3YO colt Mahler (Galileo-Rainbow Goddess, by Rainbow Quest) has "emerged as a possible" light-weight Melbourne Cup runner for Coolmore's Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O'Brien, reported racingpost.co.uk. Mahler (an emerging staying star for Coolmore shuttler & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo) won the UK Gr3 Queen's Vase (2 miles) at Royal Ascot in June & at his latest start finished 2nd in the Gr1 English St Leger (14 furlongs) at Doncaster on September 15. O'Brien confirmed: "We still haven't decided whether we will be represented in the Melbourne Cup this year, but if we are it will be Scorpion (last start runner-up to star stable-mate Yeats in the Gr1 Irish St Leger over 14 furlongs at The Curragh) and/or Mahler. They both seem to be fine after their races last weekend (September 15) & a decision about Melbourne will be made in the next week or so." And Tom Magnier (speaking in Melbourne over the weekend) confirmed to breednet.com.au: "Aidan is very eager to win the race & after discussing it we agreed Scorpion & Mahler are the 2 horses best suited to come out. Last year we were keen & very much enjoyed the experience with Yeats, but the hunger is there now to win the race & the team really wants it."
