Mandela Wins NZ Evans Classic

Monday, 24th September 2007

Ill-fated 1997 Gr1 AJC Australian Derby-winning stallion Ebony Grosve (Grosvenor-Dusky Rosa, by Indian Conquest) added a black-type success when 6YO gelding Mandela (Ebony Grosve-Wairongoa Belle, by Sea Anchor) scored by a neck in the NZ$70,000 Listed Evans Classic (1670m) at Pukekohe. Mandela (ridden by Samantha Spratt for trainers Richard Yuill & Stephen Goodin) defeated 4YO gelding Magic Cape (Magic Albert-Cape City, by Kaapstad) & Australian-bred 8YO gelding Mohican Brave (Desert King-Alcoban, by Noalcoholic). Mandela (a NZ$1,750 yearling at the 2003 NZ Bloodstock Summer Sale) now has 7 wins (also including May's Gr3 Chairman's Handicap over 2020m at Doomben & 2006's Gr3 Geelong Cup over 2400m, plus NZ's Gr2 Avondale Guineas over 2000m as a 3YO) & 8 placings (including May's Gr3 Premier's Cup over 2200m at Doomben, plus runner-up in the Gr1 NZ Derby over 2400m as a 3YO) from 28 starts.
