Allanson Says Not Enough Vaccines To Victoria

Tuesday, 25th September 2007

Racing Victoria chief executive Stephen Allanson said the 1,500 vials of equine influenza vaccine allocated to Victoria from the 1st shipment due from France on Thursday "is not enough for Victoria's racing population". Allanson told Radio Sport 927: "I cannot understand how we can just pick 1,500 horses, from which stable going to which races. We have between 6,500-7,000 horses-in-work in Victoria. To me it just seems impractical (to only have 1,500 vials) & the issue is if we vaccinate at all. We have developed a vaccine protocol to vaccinate the entire population. We would start in the middle & work outward." Allanson added: "If more vaccines are available the following week, then we could put that into our plan. Today we will have to assess our strategy & how it may unfold. Then we will discuss this with the authorities."
