Johannesburg Adds US Black-Type

Tuesday, 4th March 2008

In the US, Coolmore shuttler Johannesburg (Hennessy-Myth, by Ogygian) added a group success (& 16th individual stakes-winner world-wide) when his colt Ten Meropa (Johannesburg-Tenderly, by Danehill) came from last-to-first in the straight to score a 1.25-lengths victory in the US$110,000 Gr3 Baldwin Stakes (6.5 furlongs on turf) for 3YOs at Santa Anita Park in California. Making his US debut after previously racing in the UK, Ten Meropa (ridden by Tyler Baze for trainer Ral Ayers, who is handling horses for suspended Jeff Mullins) "walked out of the gate, but overcame the poor start with an explosive turn of foot when given his cue in the stretch" to defeat Gr2-placed winner Sky Cape (Najran-Skyscape, by Marquetry) & D Double You (Lion Hearted-Tonal, by Fly So Free) reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Ten Meropa (whose dam Tenderly is a half-sister to multiple Gr1-winner Pride) took his overall record to 2 wins & 2 placings from 6 starts; he was originally a US$67,000 yearling at the Keeneland September Sale & then resold for 70,000 guineas (A$160,000) at the UK Tattersalls Horses-In-Training Sale.
