Aust-Bred Encosta Filly Wins South Africa Black-Type

Monday, 10th March 2008

In South Africa, Coolmore sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek, by Star Way) continued his sensational weekend (& recorded his 50th stakes-winner world-wide) when Australian-bred juvenile debutante daughter Merlene De Lago (Encosta de Lago-Merlene, by Danehill) won the Listed Ruffian Stakes (1000m) for 2YO fillies by 4-lengths in 56.88sec at Turffontein for Charles Laird. Merlene de Lago (whose dam won Australia's premier 2YO sprint, the Gr1 Golden Slipper over 1200m at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney) was a $775,000 yearling (bred & consigned by John Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud) at the 2007 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. Meanwhile Merlene's latest yearling (a colt by Vinery Stud shuttler More Than Ready) is catalogued for the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.
