Sirmione Wins Gr1 Australian Cup

Monday, 10th March 2008

In Australia, Coolmore sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek, by Star Way) added a Gr1 quinella (& surged to the lead on this season's Australian general sires table) when 4YO gelding Sirmione (Encosta de Lago-World Guide, by Defensive Play) motored down the middle of the track from the tail of the field to blitz his rivals by 3.75-lengths in the $1 million weight-for-age Gr1 Darley Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington in Melbourne to give veteran trainer Bart Cummings his 13th success in this race & 249th Gr1 winner overall. Sirmione (ridden by Peter Mertens for 80-year-old Cummings) defeated multiple Gr1-winning favoured 4YO mare Princess Coup (Encosta De Lago-Stoneyfell Road, by Sovereign Red) who finished strongly after being held-up for a run & Gr2-winning 4YO entire Casino Prince (Flying Spur-Lady Capel, by Last Tycoon). Sirmione (a $300,000 yearling at the 2005 Magic Millions Premier Sale at the Gold Coast) now has 4 wins (also including 2007's Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes over 2000m at Flemington & Gr3 Grand Prix Stakes over 2100m at Eagle Farm, plus 2006's Listed Australia Post Stakes over 1400m at Eagle Farm) & 5 placings (including last start's Gr2 St George Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield on February 23, plus 2007's Gr1 Queensland Derby over 2400m at Eagle Farm & Gr3 Doomben Classic over 1615m) from 25 starts for $1,379,875 earnings.
