Thunder Gulch Adds US Gr2

Monday, 10th March 2008

Former Coolmore shuttler Thunder Gulch (Gulch-Line Of Thunder, by Storm Bird) also added a US group success when Michael Tabor's 4YO entire Circular Quay (Thunder Gulch-Circle Of Life, by Belong To Me) scored by a neck after "a thrilling stretch duel through the length of the stretch" in the US$480,000 Gr2 New Orleans Handicap (9 furlongs) for 4YOs & up at Fair Grounds in Louisiana, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Circular Quay (ridden by Garrett Gomez for trainer Todd Pletcher) defeated front-running favourite Grasshopper (Dixie Union-Grass Skirt, by Mr Prospector) & Reporting For Duty (Deputy Commander-Expanse, by Distant View). Last season Circular Quay won the Gr2 Louisiana Derby (8.5 furlongs) at Fair Grounds (prior to finishing 6th in the Gr1 Kentucky Derby); overall he now has 5 wins from 12 starts (also including 2006's Gr1 Hopeful Stakes over 7 furlongs at Saratoga & Gr3 Bashford Manor Stakes, plus runner-ups in both 2006's Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile & Gr1 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity) for US$1,480,434 earnings.
