Aust-Owned Mare Wins US Gr3

Tuesday, 11th March 2008

Within hours of the heart-stopping victory by his unbeaten 3YO gelding Light Fantastic (Danehill Dancer-Leica Or Not, by Kendor) in a 3-way photo-finish to Australia's Gr1 Cadbury Guineas (1600m) at Flemington in Melbourne, Australian Bob Scarborough's 5YO French-bred mare Mauralakana (Muhtathir-Jimkana, by Double Bed) gained the judge's verdict in another 3-way photo-finish to the US$100,000 Gr3 The Very One Handicap (9 furlongs on turf) for fillies & mares at Gulfstream Park in Florida. Despite being bumped at the start & dropping back, Mauralakana (ridden by Rene Douglas for trainer Christophe Clement) "rallied after being angled out in early stretch & seized command on the outside" to score by a neck from Tejida (Rahy-Batique, by Storm Cat) with a further head to Herboriste (Hernando-Helvellyn, by Gone West) reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Agent Grant Pritchard Gordon's Badgers Bloodstock (acting for Scarborough) paid US$900,000 for Mauralakana at last November's Keeneland Breeding Stock Sale in Kentucky. She originally made her initial 9 starts in France (winning the 2005 Gr3 Prix de Cabourg as a 2YO & 2006 Listed Prix Imprudence). Transferred to the US, she placed in both 2006's Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge (9 furlongs) at Keeneland & Gr3 Noble Damsel Handicap (8 furlongs) at Blemont Park, before winning 2007's Gr3 Locust Grove Handicap (9 furlongs) at Churchill Downs & placing in the Gr3 Glens Falls Handicap (11 furlongs) at Saratoga.
