Live Oak Foundation Mare Sultry Sun Euthanased

Sultry Sun (a foundation mare for Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Stud) was euthanased "due to the infirmities of old age" at 28, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Sultry Sun (Buckfinder-Sunny Dame, by Damascus) has produced 10 winners from 13 starters, including: multiple Gr1-winning sire Sultry Song (winner of 9 of 23 starts, including the 1992 Gr1 Hollywood Gold Cup, Gr1 Woodward Stakes & Gr1 Whitney Handicap for US$1,616,276 earnings) who subsequently sired both 1998 Canadian champion 3YO filly Kirby's Song & 2004 US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile winner Singletary among 258 winners from 344 starters in 12 crops of racing age for US$20,211,789 progeny earnings; multiple Gr1-winner Solar Splendor (winner of 11 of 42 starts, including the 1991 Gr1 Turf Classic Invitational Stakes plus both the 1991 & 1992 editions of the Gr1 Man o' War Stakes, for US$1,386,468 earnings); Gr3-winning sire Strategic Mission (sire of 2-time Gr1-winner Showing Up); & winner Sultry Allure (dam of Gr1-winner Mass Media). On the track herself, Live Oak home-bred Sultry Sun (a half-sister to multiple stakes-winner & multiple stakes-producer Lien) won 9 of 14 starts (including the 1984 Gr2 Molly Pitcher Handicap & Listed Coconut Grove Stakes) & earned US$222,277.
