Tuesday, 11th March 2008

In the US, multiple Gr1-winning 5YO mare Nashoba's Key (Silver Hawk-Nashoba, by Caerleon) added another Gr1 triumph when she "powered past the pace-setters at the top of the lane" & raced away "for a convincing 4.5-lengths romp" in the US$300,000 Gr1 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (9 furlongs on the all-weather track) for mares 4YO & up at Santa Anita Park in California, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Favourite Nashoba's Key (ridden by Garrett Gomez for trainer Carla Gaines) defeated front-running Gr2-winner Dawn After Dawn (Successful Appeal-Jhenais Jewel, by Sword Dance) & Brazilian Gr2-winner Double Trouble (Wild Event-Route Sixty Six, by Ghadeer). California-bred Nashoba's Key won her initial 7 starts last year (including the Gr1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes over 10 furlongs on turf at Santa Anita & Gr1 Vanity Handicap over 9 furlongs on Cushion Track at Hollywood Park, plus the Gr2 Milady Breeders' Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park, Gr2 Clement Hirsch Handicap at Del Mar & Listed Fran's Valentine Stakes at Hollywood Park) before her 1st defeat in the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Monmouth Park on October 27 to close her 3YO campaign. This year she began with a runner-up in the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Stakes at Santa Anita on January 26 & overall now boasts 8 wins from 10 starts for US$1,252,090 earnings.
