Randwick Development Approval For Stage 1
Australian Jockey Club chief executive Norman Gillespie announced the AJC has received approval from the Department Of NSW Planning for its Royal Randwick Stage One redevelopment. Gillespie said: "Today is a landmark for the AJC. The long-awaited redevelopment works on Royal Randwick will commence on Tuesday March 18 with the partial demolition of the Alison Road perimeter wall. This rejuvenation program has become known among those who have been working on the project as the Master Plan. The Master Plan has been divided into 3 phases of delivery to begin to offer improved service & amenity in the shortest possible time. The Stage One works are designed to increase the efficiency, safety & comfort of all visitors to Royal Randwick, including owners, trainers, members, guests, punters & the public. Substantial components of the works focus on the entry points to the racecourse & are designed to improve public transport arrangements." Stage One is scheduled for completion by mid-to-late 2009; schematic designs for Stage 2 & 3 will be developed concurrently with Stage One construction. The AJC hopes to complete its Stage 2 & 3 design planning by late 2008-early 2009: these plans "will include the intention to build new clubhouse facilities & replace the QEII stand, in addition to a wide range of structural & operational improvements."
