Vaccination For NZ Horses Going To Sydney Carnival

Wednesday, 12th March 2008

At the same time in New Zealand yesterday, NZ Thoroughbred Racing announced "horses travelling to Australia to race in the Sydney Carnival are required to be vaccinated on arrival with Protec". NZTR noted: "They are not permitted to race for 7 days. This is due to varying reactions from the vaccination, such as temperature rises & being off their food. It is also recommended that these imported NZ-trained horses be put in an isolated part of the training stable. On-going training is at the discretion of the trainer & how he/she feels the horse has reacted to the vaccination." Meanwhile NZTR emphasised: "A ban on the import of horses from Australia into NZ remains in place. MAFBNZ is working with Australian authorities to amend the Import Health Standards, subject to official agreement on the eradication of Equine Influenza."
