US Summit Features Panel On Synthetic Tracks
In the US, an "expert panel of racetrack superintendents will discuss their experiences in working with various synthetic surfaces" to highlight next week's 2nd Welfare & Safety Of The Racehorse Summit (March 17-18) at the Keeneland Race Course sales pavilion. California Horse Racing Board chairman Richard Shapiro will moderate the discussion, which will feature track superintendents Steve Wood, Butch Lehr, Dennis Moore & Mike Young, as well as surface expert Mick Peterson. The CHRB (which has mandated synthetic surfaces at its major tracks) conducted a February conference on their performance after Santa Anita Park experienced extensive drainage problems with its Cushion Track. California presented statistics that showed a 60% decrease in state racing fatalities on synthetic surfaces, compared to dirt tracks.
