California 2YOs: Average Down 19%
Overall at the Barretts Equine Selected 2YOs-In-Training Sale, 73 lots sold for US$12,996,000 (down 32.8% on last year's 88 sold for US$19,340,000). The US$178,027 average was down 19% (last year US$219,773) & the US$110,000 median was down 25.4% (last year US$147,500). The buy-back rate was 44.7% (compared with 41.3% last year) & this was the first year since 2001 which did not feature at least one horse sold for US$1 million or more. Given the "prevailing view that this year's catalogue was light on proven sire power & pedigree," Barretts president Jerry McMahon told thoroughbredtimes.com: "The numbers don't look great, but we were kind of anticipating a decline in terms of the gross. Really, I thought it was a pretty lively market overall."
