Helene Mascot Wins Gr1 HK Derby

Monday, 17th March 2008

In Hong Kong yesterday, former Coolmore shuttler Peintre Celebre (Nureyev-Peinture Bleue, by Alydar) added a Gr1 triumph when Irish-bred 4YO entire Helene Mascot (Peintre Celebre-Razana, by Kahyasi) snatched victory by a nose in the HK$16m (A$2.3m) Gr1 Mercedes-Benz HK Derby (2000m) for 4YOs at Sha Tin. Favourite Helene Mascot (ridden by Felix Coetzee for trainer Tony Cruz) defeated the NZ-bred pair Jackpot Delight (Danasinga-Principation, by Prince Echo) & Green Birdie (Catbird-Mrs Squillionaire, by Last Tycoon). Helene Mascot raced as Salford Mill last year in England, where he won a Listed Race prior to finishing 6th in the Gr1 Epsom Derby. He made his HK debut on January 20 by winning the Gr1 HK Classic Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin & followed-up last start with a 2nd in the Gr2 HK Derby Trial (1800m) at Sha Tin on February 17. Meanwhile runner-up Jackpot Delight is a grandson of 1984 Australian Horse-Of-The-Year & 6-times Gr1-winner Emancipation.
