Changes To 2008 Gr1 Melb Cup Conditions

The Victoria Racing Club yesterday announced the following changes to the conditions for the 2008 Gr1 Melbourne Cup: The Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) has been added to the list of ballot exempt races (winner only) into the Melbourne Cup; Japan's Gr1 JRA Tenno Sho Spring-Emperor's Cup (3200m) due to be run at Kyoto on May 4 has been added to the list of ballot exempt races (winner only) into the Melbourne Cup; the 2nd & 3rd place-getters in the current year's Gr1 Cox Plate & Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes respectively will pass the 1st clause of balloting for the Melbourne Cup; & the 6th, 7th & 8th place-getters in the current year's Gr1 Caulfield Cup will also pass the 1st clause of balloting for the Melbourne Cup. VRC chief executive Dale Monteith noted: "The VRC Board has been proactive in its role to ensure the Melbourne Cup race conditions continue to be both fair & relevant, as the evolution of this great race as the staying championship of the world continues. These changes certainly reflect the Board's determination in that regard. Overall the Melbourne Cup conditions are designed to attract the best possible field from Australia & overseas, & to provide fair opportunity for each horse to secure a start, according to its race performance history."
