Adena Springs 2YOs: US$380k A.P.Indy Colt

Wednesday, 19th March 2008

Meanwhile also in Florida 24 hours earlier, trainer Cam Gambolati (buying on behalf of Ol Memorial Stables, owned by University Of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino, Rick Avare, Jamal Mashburn & Chris Sullivan) paid top price of US$380,000 for a colt by A.P.Indy (the 1st foal out of multiple Gr2-winning 9YO Smoke Glacken mare Smok'n Frolic) during the annual 1-day Adena Springs Sale of 2YOs-In-Training (conducted by the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co) at Frank Stronach's Adena Springs South in Williston. The colt's dam Smok'n Frolic (purchased by Adena for US$1.25 million at the 2004 Keeneland November breeding stock sale) earned US$1,534,720 on the track (with victories including the 2002 Gr2 Cotillion Handicap, 2001 Gr2 Demoiselle Stakes & 6 other added-money events) & Gambolati told bloodhorse.com: "He's a big, magnificent colt: he's a grand-looking individual. Naturally, he's going to need time. He's not going to be a sprinter: we know that. If he went down there (to South Florida for the Fasig-Tipton Select 2YO Sale) & even breezed just 10.6sec (for 1 furlong), he would bring a lot more than he did here. It's a good situation for us." The Adena Springs juveniles don't breeze before they are sold, something Gambolati noted attracts him to the auction: "I like the way they handle them here. They take care of their horses. You get tired of horses breezing so fast; they have so many problems that you've got to stop on them. It's frustrating to me. Where does it end? How far do you push them? That's why we like this sale: they're handled with kid gloves." (Gambolati, again as agent for Ol Memorial, previously purchased 2008 Gr3 Appleton Handicap winner Buffalo Man for US$190,000 at the 2006 Adena Springs juvenile auction.)
