Danehill Adds US Gr2

Tuesday, 25th March 2008

In the US, ill-fated Coolmore shuttler & multiple champion sire Danehill (Danzig-Razyana, by His Majesty) added a US group success when Juddmonte Farms' UK home-bred 4YO daughter Costume (Danehill-Dance Dress, by Nureyev) gained the verdict in a 3-way photo-finish to the US$150,000 Gr2 Santa Ana Handicap (9 furlongs on turf) for mares 4YO & up at Santa Anita Park in California. Front-running Costume (ridden by Garrett Gomez for trainer Bobby Frankel) scored by a head from Brazilian-bred Immortelle (Vettori-Baby Rafaela, by Beau Genius) with a further head to favourite Lavender Sky (Mt Livermore-Munnaya, by Nijinsky). At her previous start Costume also won February's Gr2 Buena Vista Handicap (8 furlongs on turf) at Santa Anita. Costume (who began her career in England, where she finished runner-up in the 2007 Gr3 Oak Tree Stakes before transferring to the US) took her record to 3 wins from 12 starts for US$309,187 earnings: she ran 4th in the Gr1 Garden City Stakes in her US debut last September & prior to her latest twin Gr2 victories finished 4th in 4 successive US graded stakes.
