Bombers Target Cyprus Turf Club President
Thursday Odd Spot: Cyprus Turf Club president Stelios Panayides escaped unhurt after being "the apparent target of a car bombing" reported racingpost.co.uk. Panayides was attending a board meeting at the Turf Club's offices in Nicosia "when the front of his Mercedes, which he parked nearby only half an hour earlier, was damaged by the blast". Police confirmed "a home-made explosive device had been placed under the bonnet of the vehicle". Local media reports on the island "have speculated the bombing may have been related to an incident at a recent race meeting"; the Cyprus Mail newspaper noted 3 local racing officials "have been targeted by bombers over the past months & several are considering resigning their positions".
