Big Brown Wins US Gr1 Florida Derby

Monday, 31st March 2008

In the US, "despite breaking from an outside post with a short run into the 1st turn & setting a sizzling pace, Big Brown (Boundary-Mien, by Nureyev) blistered 11 challengers with an impressive 5-lengths romp" in the US$1 million Gr1 Florida Derby (9 furlongs) for 3YO colts & geldings at Gulfstream Park, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. In just his 3rd career start, Big Brown (ridden by Kent Desormeaux for trainer Richard Dutrow) defeated Gr2-winner Smooth Air (Smooth Jazz-Air France, by French Deputy) with another 7.5-lengths back to Peruvian dual classic winner Tomcito (Street Cry-Inside Or Outside, by Eastern Echo) in an "emphatic victory" which "vaulted Big Brown squarely onto the road to the Gr1 Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs". Big Brown "powered to the front" right from the start & "drilled an opening quarter in 22.76sec & half-mile in 45.83sec; the testing pace did nothing to sap Big Brown of his stamina however & he shook free on the far turn & charged to a commanding advantage in early stretch to remain unbeaten". Kentucky-bred Big Brown (who scored by a similarly impressive 12.75-lengths at his previous start in a 1-mile allowance race on March 5) has earned US$662,700 for his 3-from-3 victories.
