Curlin Wins Gr1 Dubai World Cup By 7.75-Lengths
US multiple Gr1-winning 4YO entire & 2007 Horse-Of-The-Year Curlin (Smart Strike-Sheriff's Deputy, by Deputy Minister) cemented his reputation as the world's best galloper on dirt when he blitzed his rivals by 7.75-lengths in the US$6 million Gr1 Dubai World Cup (2000m on dirt) at Nad Al Sheba. Despite racing 3-wide throughout the trip, hot favourite Curlin (ridden by Robby Albarado for trainer Steve Asmussen) accelerated right away from his rivals in the straight to defeat Argentine-bred & South African-trained 2007 United Arab Emirates Triple Crown winning fellow 4YO entire Asiatic Boy (Not For Sale-SS Asiatic, by Polish Navy) & US-bred 5YO gelding Well Armed (Tiznow-Well Dressed, by Notebook). Kentucky-bred Curlin (unraced as a juvenile) took his record to 8 wins & 3 placings from 11 starts for US$8,807,800 "to rank 3rd behind Cigar (US$9,999,815) & Skip Away (US$9,616,360) among all-time North American-raced earners," noted thoroughbredtimes.com. Barely 14 months ago, Curlin debuted with an emphatic 12.75-lengths victory in a 7 furlongs maiden special weight race at Gulfstream Park in February 2007 & then won both the Gr3 Rebel Stakes & Gr2 Arkansas Derby, before his initial defeat when 3rd in the Gr1 Kentucky Derby. He followed up with victory in the Gr1 Preakness Stakes & then 2nd in the Gr1 Belmont Stakes, before finishing his 3YO season with victories in both the Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes & Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic.
