Monday, 31st March 2008

In New Zealand, Westbury Stud shuttler & freshman sire Captain Rio (Pivotal-Beloved Visitor, by Miswaki) added a Gr1 triumph & 1st southern hemisphere stakes-winner when juvenile filly Il Quelle Veloce (Captain Rio-Nishaani, by Gold Brose) finished powerfully to score a 2.25-lengths victory over her male rivals in the NZ$200,000 Gr1 Ford Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) for 2YOs at Awapuni in Palmerston North. Il Quello Veloce (ridden by Noel Harris for trainer John Sargent) defeated the colts Captain Fantastic (Fantastic Light-Regal Ash, by Green Desert) & San Bernardino (Gold Mine-Miss Katella, by The Commander). Il Quello Veloce (a NZ$50,000 yearling at the 2007 NZ Bloodstock Select Sale at Karaka) took her record to 2 wins & 3 placings (including both February's Gr2 Robin Duke Of Bedford Matamata Breeders Stakes over 1200m & last start's Gr1 Ford Diamond Stakes over 1200m at Ellerslie on March 8) from 6 starts for A$187,000 earnings.
