AJC-STC Fail To Resolve 2009 Easter Race Dates

Thursday, 3rd July 2008

Meanwhile talks this week between Sydney Turf Club chief executive Michael Kenny, Australian Jockey Club racing manager Richard Freedman & Racing NSW have failed to resolve the on-going issue of whether the NSW Autumn Carnival (encompassing the STC showpiece Gr1 Golden Slipper & AJC flagship Gr1 Doncaster Handicap-Australian Derby double) will be held on fixed dates each year or vary annually depending on when Easter falls. Kenny told The Daily Telegraph: "The way I see it is, if you fix a date, you fix a date & if a race falls on Easter, it falls on Easter. Sometimes the AJC will get Easter & sometimes we will." But Freedman told the newspaper: "We have not ruled out fixing dates, but Royal Randwick & Easter is a brand & we've spent millions of dollars & more than 100 years developing that brand. Would you want to throw all that away?" Freedman & Kenny will meet again next week.
