Possible Change For German Derby Sponsor

Thursday, 10th July 2008

In Germany, BMW has stuck resolutely for 18 years by Hamburg Racecourse as the sponsor of the German Derby (Deutsches Derby), Germany's oldest Classic. Now, notes racingpost.co.uk, change is a possibility following "a high-level deputation from the Qatar Equestrian and Racing Club visited Hamburg over the weekend (where they were backing two arab races) leading to suggestions they are keen to put their financial muscle behind the Deutsches Derby". With the boom Middle East state set to sponsor the Gr1 'Arc for the 1st time this year, speculation is rife Qatar would also like to get behind the German Derby. However, Hamburg's president Eugen-Andreas Wahler refused to confirm or deny the possibility of Qatari backing. "We have had a very fruitful and successful partnership with BMW over the past 18 years," he said. "We shall of course be holding a discussion with them in the near future about our future co-operation, as we do every year after the Derby."
