De Kock Earns 1st SAf Trained Success In UK

Monday, 14th July 2008

South African trainer Mike De Kock celebrated a victory for the first South African-trained winner in England when globe-trotting 4YO entire Archipenko (Kingmambo-Bound, by Nijinsky) handsomely won the £100,000 (A$205,000) Gr2 Plymouth Gin Summer Mile Stakes (8 furlongs) at Royal Ascot. Owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum, Archipenko won the Gr1 Audemars Piguet QE II Cup at Sha Tin in April after finishing 3rd in the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free. He was ridden by South Africa's Kevin Shea to defeat 4YO mare Barshiba (Barathea-Dashiba, by Dashing Blade) & 7YO gelding Cesare (Machiavellian-Tromond, by Lomond). De Kock is yet to decide whether to tackle the Gr1 Sussex Stakes later this month or wait a week longer for the Gr1 Arlington Million in the US.
