Marchand D'Or Wins UK Gr1 July Cup

Denying trainer Aidan O'Brien his 13th Gr1 winner of the 2008 season, French-bred 5YO gelding Marchand D'Or (Marchand De Sable-Fedora, by Kendor) scraped home by a head in the £400,000 (A$832,000) Gr1 July Cup (6 furlongs) for 3YOs & up at Newmarket. Ridden by Davy Bonilla for trainer Freddy Head, Marchand D'Or defeated 4YO entire US Ranger (Danzig-My Annette, by Red Ransom) & Australian-bred 5YO gelding War Artist (Orpen-Royal Solitaire, by Brocco). Twice the winner of France's Gr1 De Gheest (1300m) at Deauville, last year Marchand D'Or was runner-up in the Gr1 Prix de la Foret (1400m) at Longchamp & the Gr1 Betfred Sprint Cup (6 furlongs) at Haydock Park. War Artist was a $57,500 yearling consigned by Attunga Stud at the 2005 Magic Millions January Gold Coast Sale.
