Red Rock Wins US Gr1 Man O' War

Monday, 14th July 2008

Former Coolmore shuttler & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added a US Gr1 triumph when 5YO entire Red Rocks (Galileo-Pharmacist, by Machiavellian) won the US$500,000 Gr1 Man o' War Stakes (11 furlongs on turf) at Belmont Park in New York. Winner of the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf, Irish-bred Red Rock (ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer Brian Meehan) upset favoured US Horse-of-the-Year 4YO entire Curlin (Smart Strike-Sherrifs Deputy, by Deputy Minister) who finished runner-up in his turf debut. Third was 9YO gelding Better Talk Now (Talkin Man-Bendita, by Baldski), also a former Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf winner. Curlin's inaugural turf run (an attempt to assess his suitability for the Gr1 Arc in France later this year) left more questions than answers and he appears likely to have another tilt at the surface before an Arc decision is made.
