Top Spin Wins Gr1 Singapore Derby

Monday, 14th July 2008

In Singapore yesterday, Lomar Park Stud's dual Gr1-winning stallion Arena (Danehill-Lee's Bid, by Tawfiq) added a major group success when Australian-bred 4YO gelding Top Spin (Arena-Gas, by Strategic) scored a facile win in the S$1 million (A$800,000) Gr1 Singapore Derby (2000m) at Kranji. Ridden by Noel Callow for trainer Laurie Laxon, Top Spin defeated Japanese-bred 4YO gelding El Dorado (Stay Gold-White Leap, by White Muzzle) by 3 lengths. A short margin back in 3rd was Michael Freedman-trained fellow 4YO gelding Stedman (Second Empire-Surfside Lay, by Pago Pago). The victory came on the heels of Top Spin's win in the S$300,000 (A$240,000) Gr2 Singapore Derby Trial (1600m) for 4YOs at Kranji in late June. Earlier this season Top Spin won 3 successive Gr3 events at Kranji: March's Gr3 Chairman's Trophy (1800m), plus both February's Gr3 Three Rings Trophy (1400m) & Gr3 Singapore 4YO Mile (1600m); & in April he finished 3rd in the Gr2 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2000m). Overall Top Spin now has 13 wins & 7 placings (also including all 3 legs of Singapore's 2007 3YO Challenge, plus November's Gr1 Singapore Gold Cup over 2200m) from 21 starts. In his only unplaced run he finished 4th, beaten just over a length.
